Farm Happenings for December 26, 2020

Posted on December 20th, 2020 by Jack Manix

Hi Folks, another smooth pickup with most boxes returned. Thanks so much! Hard to believe we're halfway through the CSA. Luckily we had time to clean up the snow before the weekend. We had to run some heat in our larger greenhouses during the storm to melt the falling snow so weight wouldn't build up on the roofs. It cost some money for the heat but it's a lot cheaper than rebuilding a greenhouse! There were also some pretty cold nights but all crops survived.

For next week we'll be offering organic carrots from Clearbrook Farm as ours are all harvested. Andrew, who owns Clearbrook, worked with us for 8 years and now runs "Walker Farm West" in Shaftsbury, VT. We'll be growing extra carrots next year as we sold more root crops than ever this past season at the farmstand. In fact, we sold more of all our crops than ever and donated more to Food Banks than ever. Thanks to our irrigation systems and a great crew the year ended up pretty well. One of the highlights of the year was our leek crop, the largest leeks we've ever grown. Good weather now for leek and potato soup as they'll be available for the 4th share pickup. Don't forget to customize your share before Tuesday, 8 am if you want to make adjustments to this weeks selections. Once the swap period is over, the pick lists are generated and it's too late for changes.

The day before the big snow we finished mulching the strawberries. Now back to finishing orders, completing maintenance projects and preparing for next season. It always makes us smile when folks say to us "Now you get to take a nice rest all winter"!
