Farm Happenings for Week of August 15th

Posted on August 11th, 2022 by Lorraine Blackwell

Reminder that this is the last week of deliveries before we take two weeks off for our family vacation to British Columbia! We will be back with deliveries the week of September 5th.

We have sweet corn from Fair Fields Farm again and our bell peppers and roasting peppers have ripened nicely and are ready! The garlic is now fully cured and I have added a bulk option for ordering in addition to the single bulbs. If stored in a cool, dry location, our garlic will last well into the new year. We generally are using our garlic into April before we get softening or sprouting. If you are interested in ordering more than 10kg, please contact me directly as there is a large order discount available.

Today I planted the rest of the fall crops, with the exception of arugula and spinach which will be going in the ground soon. Soon we will be starting the bulk harvesting of the fall storage crops with onions coming out first, then winter squash, potatoes, carrots, and cabbage. You may have noticed that we've taken a few weeks off from offering microgreens. This is for two reasons: in the hottest weather it is hard to control the quality and we end up tossing more than we'd like (and microgreen seed is quite expensive so that's not ideal) and, secondly, the greenhouse is full of curing garlic and space is limited. We will be back with a variety of microgreens in September.

You will also notice that kale and collards are unavailable. We had a late season explosion of flea beetles, which has decimated these crops. I have replanted some kale but it will be a few weeks until it is ready. For now, we have chard and salad mix to fill your leafy green needs!
