Spring Share Week Four

Posted on June 11th, 2021 by Lorraine Blackwell

We're starting to shift to the first of the early summer vegetables with this week's share. One particularly exciting addition is organic strawberries from Fair Fields Farm. These strawberries will be available as an extra purchase only for the next two weeks so enjoy them while they here! Organic strawberries are hard to find and a precious commodity and I look forward to making some of my favourite strawberry desserts.

The first taste of snap peas is also in the swap section with lots more coming for everyone in the coming weeks. The beets are also looking great and their greens are at peak eating quality so now is also the time to pull out your favourite beet green recipe.

I've had many questions about how much to wash the vegetables you receive your shares, so I thought I'd answer here. Any green that comes bagged has been washed once. For early crops grown in the greenhouse this often means they are quite clean after one wash. Field greens that have gone through rain storms will often need a second wash to be grit free. For foods to be considered 'washed and ready to eat' they need to have been triple washed. So, use your best judgment as to whether you re-wash your greens before eating. Most other veggies have been washed or rinsed before packing but may need another rinse or scrub. The items I rarely wash are tomatoes, herbs, eggplant, cucumbers, peas, beans, and zucchini. This is because all these vegetables have a much longer shelf life when unwashed, so just rinse them before use.
