Spring Share Week Two

Posted on May 22nd, 2020 by Lorraine Blackwell

The gorgeous weather expected over the next few days should be perfect for getting lots of plants in the ground! I planted the cucumbers today and by the end of the weekend I hope to plant zucchini, tomatoes, carrots, basil, and more. The potatoes should be planted now too but it seems that the seed potatoes I ordered in January are stuck in shipment somewhere in Alberta! Fingers crossed that they arrive soon!

A few share members missed picking up their shares this week, which reminded me to outline my missed share policy. If you forget to pickup your share (and almost everyone does at least once), just contact me with 24 hours and I will save your share in our cooler. Then you can pickup on the farm at your convenience. If you are unable to get to the farm, we will donate the share to a local food bank or feed to our pigs.

This week you will see kohlrabi and spring turnips as options in your share. Spring turnips are nothing like fall storage turnips and I encourage you try them if you aren't sure what they are all about. They benefit from a light hand when cooking: lightly sauteing or roasting until golden brown but still with some texture is ideal. Spring turnips are also delicious raw. I enjoy them sliced in a salad just like a radish. Kohlrabi is good grated into salads and slaws or I particularly enjoy it made into kohlrabi latkes. Serve the latkes with either applesauce or sour cream. The leaves of kohlrabi are also great - something like a cross between a cabbage and a kale leaf, but softer. Enjoy!
