Farm Happenings for August 17, 2021

Posted on August 15th, 2021 by Mike Kozlowski

I was so happy with our garlic harvest this weekend. Thanks to those of you who came out to help. Whether you stayed for a while or just popped in to say hello it was fun to share the experience with you.

The garden is starting to feel the impact of this extended drought. I am noticing many plants that are growing less vigorously than they should be and I see signs that the plants are stressed. Just now, as I write this, I have two pumps pushing water out to the field but there is no amount of water that can replace a good soak from above. I see that dugouts in our county are all way lower than they normally are, hay crops are coming off earlier and smaller than normal, grain crops are stunted, and many cattle ranchers have begun to liquidate their animals. I have read articles in agricultural publications that are using terms like natural disaster. It feels serious. Like many people in agriculture, I've got my fingers crossed that this will end soon and that next year will be different. In the meantime, I'm hopeful that some of our fall crops that are not yet mature get a chance to keep growing as many of them are still quite undersized.
