Hello!
It's Mike here from Steel Pony Farm. Thank you so much for trusting me to provide your produce this summer. I'm feeling really optimistic and excited about the farm season.
If we haven't yet met I would like to introduce myself. This is my ninth season running Steel Pony Farm. I grew up in the city and in my 20s I had a chance to learn a little bit about agriculture while I was in Kenya and it opened my eyes to the importance of developing robust local food systems. I'm obsessed with the idea of growing the most nutrient dense vegetables possible and I know that healthy vegetables come from healthy soil. Accordingly, I'm working hard to create solutions that work in our climate to be the best steward of the soil that I can be. I live in Red Deer with my wife MacKenzie and our son Adler who is 20 months old and commute out to the farm which is about 15 minutes south east of town. I'm so excited about the first delivery of the season. Despite some weather challenges we are doing quite well and are essentially on track and on schedule.
At the beginning of July in Central Alberta very few root crops are ready so expect to be loading up on salad and leafy greens for the next few weeks. That said, I have a crop of beets that I transplanted in early May that are ready to go which will add some nice substance to the mix.
Many of you are new customers. If this is your first time with us I think you will find that our software partner Harvie does a great job of administering this program. At pick up we will have your list of vegetables printed out for you. You can bring your own bags, but if you forget you can use some of our reused plastic bags or you can buy a Steel Pony cloth bag for $2.00.
You will see me and/or members of the farm crew (MacKenzie, Laken and Ryan) at your pick up. Please introduce yourself and feel free to ask us any questions that you may have. We're looking forward to meeting you.
Look for us at the Sylvan Lake Market with a small chalk sign that says Steel Pony Farm and a larger banner that reads "The Good Farmers Coop"
