Farm Happenings for October 21, 2022

Posted on October 18th, 2022 by Peter Seely

A bed of spinach, with a cover cropped field on the right

This week's offerings:   Maybe nothing new this week: you've seen it all before!  We start to go a second time around with our assorted winter squash -- this week both buttercup, and heart of gold, are included in many shares, but others are available as well!  For the potatoes, either red, or a mix of red and purple potatoes.  We probably are seeing the last of the peppers, the eggplant, the tomatoes, and the cilantro; cold temperatures are doing them in.  Brief hiatus with the salad mix; more coming from the greenhouse if we can get it transplanted! Spinach and arugula still coming; here is apprentice Erica Heinig beginning to harvest the long bed of spinach. Usually we pick with a crew, so that the 1/8 mile rows are not so daunting!

Coming soon:  Brussels sprouts next week!  And a few more carrots -- it definitely was not a good carrot year at Springdale, but some more coming! And on an upcoming visit to Michigan to visit our daughter Esther at school there, we can stop by Pleasant Hill Farm, in Baroda, Michigan, to get some frozen blueberries, so they should be available soon as well!

Remaining deliveries:  Two more regular season deliveries after this week, October 28 and Nov. 4th.  Then the separate late fall season, comprised of deliveries on Nov. 18th, Dec. 2nd, and Dec. 16th.  Here is the link to sign up for that share if you would still like to:

You can also access it anytime by going into your Harvie account, select my farm, then select place order. They will see the fall share when they scroll down. This "Late Fall" season of 3 deliveries would include many of the same items that you are getting in these last deliveries, though also a few other items such as cranberries and more Brussels sprouts.

On the farm:  Here is how we plant the cover crops:

We try to have something growing on as much of our fields as possible going into the winter!

Last week we also had a tour of the farm with some of the 2022 Wisconsin Organic Vegetable Manager Apprentices (two of which we are hosting at Springdale), as well as a visit of some home-schooled families.

We do have as part of our mission showing and explaining the how's and why's and results of our farming methods, so if you and/or your group would like to come visit, feel free to inquire!   We weren't organized enough to schedule a fall field day for you members, but don't let that stop you from coming by to see us and the farm, especially during the beautiful fall season!

Have a good week!
