Farm Happenings for October 19, 2022

Posted on October 16th, 2022 by Peter Seely

Apprentice Erica Heinig with a spinach harvest. The rows are 'only' 1/8 of a mile long, so she'll be busy for a while!

This week's offerings: About the only new crop this week would be some shiitake mushrooms, of which there are unfortunately not too many.  Thanks to Ryan Shortridge for growing these for us!  We start to go a second time around with our assorted winter squash -- this week both buttercup, and heart of gold, are included in many shares, but others are available as well!  A mix of purple and red potatoes this week for the potato lovers.  We probably are seeing the last of the peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, and cilantro; cold temperatures are doing them in.  A few bags of apples and pears left; thanks to our fellow (fruit) growers for these additions!  (Frozen blueberries available soon, too!)

Coming soon:  Brussels sprouts next week!  And a few more carrots -- it definitely was not a good carrot year at Springdale, but some more coming!

Remaining deliveries:  Two more regular season deliveries after this week.  October 26 and Nov. 2nd.  Then the separate late fall season, comprised of deliveries on Nov. 16, Nov. 30, and Dec. 14.  Here is the link to sign up for that share if you would still like to:

You can also access it anytime by going into your Harvie account, select my farm, then select place order. They will see the fall share when they scroll down. This "Late Fall" season of 3 deliveries would include many of the same items that you are getting in these last deliveries, though also a few other items such as cranberries and more brussels sprouts.

On the farm:  Here is how we plant the cover crops:

We also had a tour of the farm with some of the 2022 Wisconsin Organic Vegetable Manager Apprentices, as well as a visit of some home-schooled families.

We do have as part of our mission showing and explaining the how's and why's and results of our farming methods, so if you and/or your group would like to come visit, feel free to inquire!   We weren't organized enough to schedule a fall field day for you members, but don't let that stop you from coming by to see us and the farm, especially during the beautiful fall season!

Have a good week -- and apologies for the late sending of this note!
