Keeping Everyone Safe

Posted on November 27th, 2020 by Marcelle Paulin

Hello Members!

Our Winter CSA program is onto our 4th (out of 10) delivery for the season! We hope you are enjoying our cold weather organic veggies as much as we do!

Here is the link to this week's edition of "Well Vittled" our CSA newsletter!

As Covid cases rise in Thunder Bay we will be a making a change to our pickup this week: To keep staff and members safe, members will not have access to the building (Cardinal room) during pickup. Once you arrive and check in, we will pack your share into paper bags for you to grab and go. We expect that your share should not take more than 5 or 6 minutes to pack but please be prepared to be outside for a few minutes while we pack your share. Hopefully this system will work for us while Thunder Bay and district are in Yellow (protect measures).

This week we are featuring some potential gift items like our logo shirts, mesh produce bags (fill with organic veggies for a friend or colleague) vegetable storage magnets, Rose N Carantz coffee, Bakeshop on Boundary croissants and NorWest maple syrup (local!!). We also have our handmade Natural Wreaths available to add to your pickup this week.

We are still offering some spaces to cut a natural Christmas tree on our property. This is done by appointment (please email to arrange) and costs $50 per tree. You and your family/bubble can go for a private wagon ride in our woods and select a black spruce or balsam fir for your holiday enjoyment. Weekend and weekday appts available!

Finally, we would love to feature your favourite Sleepy G CSA recipe in this email each week. Please feel free to share your recipes or ideas with us via email or social platform for us to share. This week Anita shared a neat recipe for a veggie reuben sandwich which she thoughtfully prepared for us and brought to farm for us to try. Thank you :))!!

Vegetable Reuben Sandwich

I love beets and grilled cheese, so I had to try this recipe. This sandwich substitutes beets for the corn beef in a traditional Reuben.

  • Butter the outside of both pieces of bread
  • Spread your favourite kind of mustard on the inside of both pieces of bread
  • Then place a layer of cheese (I use Swiss, but use whatever you have)
  • then sauerkraut
  • sliced cooked beets as thick or thin as you like
  • another layer of sauerkraut
  • another layer of cheese
  • top with the 2nd piece of bread with mustard
  • It will look quite thick, but during the grilling process it cooks together and gets thinner
  • Move carefully to a heated fry pan and toast one side then flip to toast the other side like a thick grilled cheese
  • Enjoy with more mustard and a pickle!
