Farm Happenings for October 23, 2019: Week 4 out of 12!

Posted on October 18th, 2019 by Robinette Farms

FRUIT ALERT!
We have Asian Pears from Fox Run Farms in Brainard as an extra item for purchase this week!
These are sweet, crunchy, and perfect for the fall for snacks, salads, desserts and more.

We are feeling the work change on the farm as we are entering the last 2 weeks of October! We only have 2 more Sunday Farmers’ Markets left and then we get a break off markets for a few weeks until the Holiday Markets start...stay tuned for details on those markets!

The weather has turned dry and fall-like with mild night time temperatures, allowing us to continue our fall harvest of bulk root crops and clean up our fields.

Next week we will likely be planting our first crop for the 2020 season...garlic! The last several years we have been buying our garlic seed from Beth and Nathan at Meadowlark Hearth Farm in Scottsbluff, NE. They have been farming and seed saving for over 30 years and are certified organic and biodynamic. They grow vegetable seed for their own sales on their website but also grow seed contracts for other seed companies. In addition to the seed growing, they run a CSA program and also raise grass fed/grass finished beef and Berkshire pigs.

In addition to the farm they also run The Living Environment Foundation, a non profit cultivating diversity in soil, seed and community through ecological stewardship and biodynamic agriculture. If you are ever in the Scottsbluff area, their farm has a nature preserve and they offer many activities and volunteer opportunities throughout the seasons!

Next week I’ll talk more about Thanksgiving and your options for CSA that week!

Enjoy the lovely fall weather!
