New Offerings!

Posted on July 31st, 2020 by Anna Bunk

Now that the season is in full swing and our Heart of the Season members have joined us, we thought it was time to share some information with you all about the Harvie add-on's we’ve bought in from other farms or nearby businesses. Most of you have seen the Getting Cultured sauerkraut and Nash’s flour options on Harvie, but we’re about to have some new treats up and we’re very excited about the work these farmers are doing!

Sauerkraut and Other Ferments from Getting Cultured:

For starters, Getting Cultured is about to finish up its first custom River Run Farm Ferment, with napa cabbages from our very own fields! This is the beginning of a new collaboration with our friends and neighbors at Getting Cultured. We will be providing the produce and they will be fermenting specially for you all, our farmshare members. Getting Cultured is a special kraut maker, they do all of their fermenting in glazed clay crocks. As far as we know all commercially available ferments are made in plastic or steel, and so we feel quite fortunate to be offering this special stuff. Hurray for probiotics!!

Nash’s flour

Most of you have had a chance to try some of our neighbor Nash's flour. Nash’s organic grains are grown and milled right here in the Dungeness Valley, providing us with a freshly milled flour that we trust. Their whole wheat flour is ground and 'bolted' in a beautiful stone mill, making for a superior whole wheat flour than your typical commercially available 'high-extraction whole wheat flour'.

Almonds

Marian Farms, in Fresno, CA produces these almonds using biodynamic farming practices and specific pasteurization processes to preserve the most health-giving components of the almonds. And as almond lovers and soil lovers, we are particularly excited to be eating almonds grown out of a soil that is carefully stewarded.

Hazelnuts

These hazelnuts are grown at Meridian Orchards in Aurora, OR. They are some of the very very few organic hazelnuts grown, in Oregon and also around the world. Here’s a sweet little video about the family of farmers.

And finally - We’ve got beans!

Cranberry Beans

These beauties, in all their red speckled glory, are grown Basin, WA. They’re packed with protein, iron, potassium and more and a delight in soups, salads, and pastas!  Did I mention they’re one of the best tasting beans we have ever eaten!?

Garbanzo beans

Given the obvious need for some good hummus to pair with all the veggies coming your way, we found these organically grown garbanzo beans from a farm in Legrange, Oregon. Make a hummus, or like our little toddler prefers, eat one bean at a time savoring the flavor complexity and nutritional value of this wonderful plant.

Pinto Beans

These pinto beans are grown by Ernie’s Organics in Shoshone, Idaho, as a part of a sophisticated alfalfa, grain, bean, corn and potatoes rotation. The Brossys who run Ernie's Organics consider themselves biological farmers, and we hope you can taste the difference between regular pinto beans and biologically grown pinto beans.

You'll be seeing all these options up on Harvie soon! please reach out if you have more questions about the farms we're sourcing from, how to cook any of these items, or what our favorite fact about garbanzo beans is.

Hoping you all are staying well, sustained and healthy right now.

All the best,

Anna, Noah and the River Run Crew
