Farm Happenings for July 15, 2020

Posted on July 13th, 2020 by Anna Bunk

Greetings Farmshare members!

Last week’s weather had been so unusually chilly, we are starting to get concerned about some of our hot-weather crops. In our climate, since there is no hope for a reliably warm June, we rely on warm weather in July and Augusts in order to grow crops such as cucumbers and squash. These crops are currently struggling along through these cooler, foggy maritime days, waiting until their break. Our fingers are crossed- we love snacking on cucumbers!

New this week: the collards are on. Enjoy these like you would prepare other leafy greens or try a simple farm favorite- collards chopped and cooked down in stock (veggie or meat) until almost a mush. Add a dash of spice and salt- delish!

Unlike the garlic you would buy at the grocers, the fresh garlic is straight out of the ground and not cured. This means it is not dried so it will not store outside of the fridge. The skins are much easier to peel since there will be a membrane on each clove and no thin papery material to peel off. It is delicious and spicy!
