Farm Happenings for June 18, 2019 (week 2)

Posted on June 14th, 2019 by Neil Stauffer

We are so happy to have our weekly CSA members back as we also welcome our bi-weekly members getting their CSA for the first time this season. If you want to follow along or reference our newsletters from week to week, you can find all of them at the following link:

Here at the farm we continue to get excited about all of the good crops coming in right now. Just a few weeks ago it felt like we only had various forms of lettuce and greens to harvest. Now the list of fresh products is growing longer almost by the day. And we now spend a good portion of our time simply harvesting from the crops we planted during April and May. I'm some of the items in your box will be new to you. I encourage you to try them. For example, the sweet salad turnips in many of the upcoming boxes will become new favorites for many of you. Just try them. Even raw, they will make you say, "Oh wow!"

We also grew our flock of laying hens recently, and we are working hard to keep them all happy and healthy. For those of you getting eggs with your CSA, you'll be glad to know the chickens are enjoying life on pasture (except for a few stubborn ones that are still attached to spending time in the winter barn).

This afternoon, our field crew is out transplanting sweet potatoes. They will be a fun treat come September/October. And we finally got our potatoes planted this past week too. This week's picture shows Susanna hilling the newly planted potatoes with our wheat field showing in the background. The same wheat that will be used to make the bread shares next year!

Please continue to keep the feedback coming. Let us know what's working, what's not working. We love to have a direct line of communication with the folks eating our food. So don't be shy if there's something you want to ask or to let us know.

Have a great weekend!

--Farmer Neil, on behalf of the crew
