Farm Happenings for October 29, 2019 (week 21)

Posted on October 25th, 2019 by Neil Stauffer

Hello and how's it going? Glad to share with you the news from the week. We harvested a good number of sweet potatoes from the field this week--just in time to share them with you in the boxes. And we also started harvesting our fresh turmeric from the greenhouse. For those of you not familiar, turmeric is a health-wise tropical tuber that we love to grow alongside our fresh ginger under the cover of our greenhouse during the hot months. Its unique culinary uses, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties make it a popular choice for the health conscious.

Winter squash will feature prominently in this weeks boxes too. Delicata (a sweet nutty variety that has skins thin enough to eat), butternut (the one and only staple), and Thelma Sanders sweet potato squash (an heirloom variety that we are growing for the first time this season). 3 varieties that can be utilized in all kinds of Autumn cooking.

For those of you receiving the bi-weekly boxes, this will be your last delivery for the season. Thank you again for your investment in buying local from Rivendale Farms. We will stay in touch as we make plans for the 2020 season. Feel free to return your flattened box one more time to the pick up location if you are able.

Have a great week,

Farmer Neil, on behalf of the crew
