Farm Happenings

You will see we are thinking outside the box to detour insects with the colorful addition of marigolds to our brussels sprout patch!

Our dedicated farm crew spent MANY, MANY LONG, slow, tedious HOURS cleaning small aphids off last years brussels sprouts and needed a solution.

Fingers crossed that Pam's (our employee) suggestion works!

They will be ready to consume along with other great flavors from the farm this November to January!

Planting a few marigolds to naturally denture the
aphids that seem to attack brussels sprouts.

Farmer Phil's TOP 5 this week!

These LOOK healthy!
* TASTE oh-so good!
* Harvesting PLENTY right NOW!

1. Get Beets NOW! - In the USA they say an "apple a day keeps the doctor away." In Germany they say, "a beet a day keeps the doctor away."

SO GOOD FOR YOU... thinly slice beets into
your
salad. Even Farmer John can eat them like this,
as well as Dwight Schrute (from the TV show "The Office")

2. Sugar and Snow peas - Celebrate the simplicity of eating the entire pod raw or cooked.

Pull the stem backwards to remove the string
that runs down the middle of the pods.

3. Fresh Pasta coming your way- Refrigerate immediately or freeze within 7 days.

DO NOT STORE IN YOUR CUPBOARD.

4. Cucumbers - Farmer's choice is an element of surprise and delight as to which type you receive.

Eating cucumbers may lead to weight
loss and balancing your hydration.

5. Try these pretty colorful cherry tomatoes.

The ultimate snack food!

Remember this year's Challenge for Diane is... to GUIDE YOU to "eat everything in your box"...

We coached CSA member, Rebekah who was struggling to know what "food prep" means. We pointed out that when she takes her box home the first thing she should think about is putting her meat onto a plate to thaw in the refrigerator.

As a result of the coaching, she told us the next day she was encouraged because she didn't just throw the raw meat to the back of the freezer where it would take her weeks to consider it again. She simply thought of food prepping once more and seasoned the meat putting it under the broiler to cook. Not knowing when she would use it, she simply cut into pieces and threw them into the freezer for a busy day.

Food prepping saved the day and made Rebekah's Fresh Tomato Pasta recipe a pleasure to fix for lunch after church. As luck would have it she had chicken chunks, garlic scapes, and pasta that she had thrown previously in the freezer as an exit strategy from an earlier CSA box.

The insight of coaching empowered her husband also to feel needed with his trusty knife. He willingly sat on a kitchen chair and chopped tomatoes, sugar snap peas, and scallions that she delegated to him.

This allowing Rebekah to comfortably be in the kitchen to warm the chicken, get the seasonings ready and prepare a single pot of boiling water for the pasta and snap peas.

Time was cut to 10 short minutes and they had their own version of Fresh Tomato Pasta

It's as easy as responding to this email which goes to the farm office. Diane will be happy to try and guide you along the way with a coaching tip since she can see what's coming in your box.

What to do with Fresh Basil that is LEFT OVER?...

TO FREEZE:

  • Wash & dry basil leaves.
  • Place leaves into freezer bags.
  • Remove as much air as possible, either by pressing or using a drinking straw to suck the air out, and freeze.
  • Break off chunks as needed and use within 2-3 months.
