Welcome to the Patroon Land Farm - Happy Fall 2022

Chrysanthemums, nicknamed “mums,” are one of fall’s best known flowers. They’re usually the last plant to bloom before frost.  Mums come in a wide range of colors including white, yellow, orange, lavender, purple, red and bicolor. They’re easy-to-grow and can be used in beds, borders and containers. They attract butterflies in the fall and make great cut flowers, lasting up to two weeks in a bouquet.

The Fall brings new challenges to the Farm as we prepare to let the fields rest for the winter.  One of our first tasks as we move into fall is to separate our bulbs of garlic into cloves for planting.  Next step is to disc & chisel the field to prepare the soil for making the beds.  The soil must be at the right moisture level and consistency (no clods) to make the beds.  Once beds are made - the black mulch (actually ground up and powdered stone made into a roll that looks like black plastic) is rolled out on top of the bed and tucked in under the soil so it doesn't blow away.  Holes are punched in the mulch and soil with our water wheel (and instrument pulled by the tractor) and now we are ready to plant our cloves of garlic.  Once planted, we mulch on the top with 6 inches of straw to protect from freezing over the winter.   Garlic is a perennial and will start sending out some roots this fall  before going dormant for the winter.

We are ready to begin our winter share season - and look forward to supplying you with a good variety of vegetables to grace your table.  The winter share differs from our summer share in that we do not offer choice - we don't have access to the same variety of vegetables as in the summer - all shares that we pack will have the same vegetables and same amounts.  Most of the vegetables we include - since you only receive them monthly - will also have longer shelf lives - such as - winter squash -potatoes - onions - garlic - cabbage - beets - carrots -  apples - to name a few that will be in your shares.  Each share will contain 20 - 25 pounds of vegetables and or fruit -  Delivery Dates are - November 3 & 4   - December 1 & 2 - January 5 & 6  Price is $62 per share per month.  If you have any questions - please contact me - Bob - at  bobb@regionalfoodbank.net

Hoping you are enjoying the Fall season -

Very best, Bob
