Farm Happenings for October 1, 2020

Posted on September 25th, 2020 by Steve Young

Winter squash harvesting and washing is the one annual task that reminds us all that the growing season is coming to its finale. Many of the long term fall harvested crops have been tended to all summer in hopes for a good fall harvest. There's plenty of winter squash this year to share with you, however the selection won't be quite as diverse. A portion of the winter squash area was flooded from heavier rain last spring and plants in those spots perished. I'm pretty battle hardened to these situations from all the years seeing nature unexpectedly ravage a crop but earlier in my farming career I would be devastated. To compensate for potential loses I have to plant more then I actually need. Some years I've been long on winter squash, and some I've been shy. This year the harvest should be just right. Kind of a Goldilocks and the three bears" scenario. Have a great week everyone!
