Farm Happenings for August 29, 2020

Posted on August 21st, 2020 by Ben Sayler

We are in the peak season of summer flavors (and colors!) - tomatoes, corn, peaches. So many juicy, full flavors. Some of our summer favorites are cold gazpacho, tomato pie, salsa, BLTs, and a green chicken salad. The deer enjoyed all of our lettuce plants this summer, but new lettuce heads are now ready for harvest.

New this week we have honeycrisp apples, fresh baby beets w/beautiful greens (best ones we have ever grown!), lettuce heads, chard, and more! Please take the time to swap items and add extras to get the food you want to get you through the week.

As the days are getting shorter, our fall crops are coming in strong. We are starting to pick from our fall plants, like lettuce heads, a new crop of chard and kale, and fresh beets. It is hard to believe, but we are nearly finished our fall plantings. This week we planted more lettuce, spinach, and radishes. In two weeks, we will plant one more time and then we will be finished planting for the year.

The lack of rain on the farm has been quite an expense this year. We are not allowed to use any water on the farm land we lease so Ben has to buy water when it doesn't rain. It has been incredibly frustrating to watch and hear storm after storm miss the farm this summer. On the plus side, Farmer Ben grows great fall crops after we make through the dry summer days. Hopefully, fall rain will be kinder on us.

Our chickens have slowed their laying leaving many of you high and dry on farm fresh eggs. We will be adding new chickens to our flock very soon so we can provide more eggs to you soon.

And PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE read your label. We are still having problems with members getting their correct orders due to pick up errors. We really appreciate your attention to detail with this so everyone can get their correct order.

Have a great week!
