Farm Happenings for August 15, 2020

Posted on August 9th, 2020 by Ben Sayler

The tastes of summer are on this weeks menu for you! We have the best local sweet corn from Scenic View Orchards. Although other local corn was available earlier in the season, we always wait for this crop from SVO due to its consistent size, high quality, and freshness! Lots of fruit from Catoctin Mountain Orchard including sugar cube cantaloupes, blackberries, peaches, and nectarines. Please use the swap function and add extras to get the food you want this week.  Please do not go the grocery store for produce that is available locally right now! We do our best to provide a wide selection of food for you to enjoy and keep you healthy.

The fall crops we recently planted are looking great! Broccoli, Lettuce, Spinach, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Lettuce, and more have taken great to their new home and we look forward to sharing them you soon. The deer had a feast on the Swiss Chard. We are replanting it this week and will put chicken wire over it to prevent them from doing it again. More broccoli, lettuce, and cauliflower are being planted as well to have consistent for you in late fall. We got some of the rain this past week and it helped germinate salad mix, turnips, and radishes without using irrigation water. Also planted in this field are carrots. Carrots have always been a difficult crop for us-mainly due to weed competition, but we are not giving up on them. Hopefully this is the year for success!

As always, thank you very much for supporting our small farm. We truly love what we do and are glad that you also find it very important. Food is the most important part of your life. We are glad that you recognize that and chose us to provide you with healthy food this season.

Extras this week include:

all fruits and vegetables

vinegar and olive oil

honey

kombucha

cow and goat cheese

herbs

hot peppers

If you would like any other items in bulk to preserve for winter enjoyment-please contact us. We can order extra fruit from the orchards for you and usually can accommodate special request for bulk veggies with advanced notice.
