Farm Happenings for April 11, 2020

Posted on April 3rd, 2020 by Ben Sayler

Hello Farm Supporters!

We hope this message finds you healthy and happy. Thank you so very much to everybody who has been purchasing from us during our pre-season sales. It is much appreciated and we are glad to have safe food for you to enjoy.

On Monday we seeded the second plantings of salad, radishes, peas, onions, arugula, and spinach. The first planting was about three weeks ago and will be ready in about two weeks. By spreading out multiple plantings of the same crop, we hope to have a constant supply during the spring. Fields have been weeded and watered regularly-now we are just waiting for them to grow!

We have a couple new items this week. One is sweet potatoes. We harvested these last fall and have them stored in our basement (where it is dark and cool). Some type of rodent, likely mice, chewed into them while still growing in the field. While they are not the most presentable-they tastes amazing!!! We are offering these as $5 for 3+ lb bag. We also discovered some onions that overwintered. Ben tasted one and they are really good. Limited availability.

Unfortunately, Salad Mix is finished for a few weeks until our new plantings are ready. We had to remove it to make room for tomatoes in the greenhouse. I know, sad news, but TOMATOES in late June!!!

In better news, the chickens are increasing their laying and we have nearly double the amount of eggs available this week as we did last. That being said, please do not order more than one. It seems that everyone wants eggs and we want to provide them to as many people as possible. We hope to increase the order limit next week.

Our main season CSA is filling up very quickly. If you have not registered yet, please do so ASAP to guarantee your share in the harvests!https://www.harvie.farm/signup/pleasant-hill-produce

Please leave your boxes and bring back your egg cartons for us to reuse. We are keeping all packaging materials in a separate area untouched for three weeks before reusing. We have also implemented new safety measures on the farm to guarantee your safety. These include wearing masks and gloves, regular sanitation of harvesting materials, regular sanitation of any touched surface (door handles, light switches, faucets, etc.), social distancing, and only one point of contact after produce has been harvested.

Thanks for all of your support. We are in this together. Be Healthy. Be Happy.

Thanks,

Farmer Ben
