Veggie Share - Week 7

Posted on July 22nd, 2019 by Kim Barker

This update is going to be short and sweet because we are currently at the family cottage with our fam. Blueberry pancakes (wild blueberries picked yesterday, we just love harvesting so much we can't stop!) are sizzling on the stove, children are wanting to be played with, and the river is calling.

It is not easy to leave the farm, where nothing is ever done. But it's very important and we are continually working and striving towards a work-life balance, where we make the farm work for us rather than the other way around. This time of year can be really hard for farmer minds and bodies, which have been going non-stop since March. We took two weeks off for our wedding two years ago, and we plan on working that into our schedule again in the future as a yearly break. But for now, this short break at the cottage will work wonders.

Before we left, Alex set up the irrigation to run automatically. It turns on and waters the whole field by drip tape twice a day for an hour at a time. And he set up a sprinkler in the greenhouse as well! We also got fall cabbages and kohlrabi planted.

With the hot weather and a decent rain last week, the field is popping. We feasted on the first cucumbers of the season - so sweet and refreshing. Zucchinis are really coming along now and we're getting more and more tomatoes. It's hard to predict how big the zucchinis are going to be (guaranteed to be some baseball bat ones when we get back from our short hiatus on Wednesday)... If you get zucchinis in your share, you might get a few littles ones, a couple medium ones, or a big one. The small ones are great for sauteing, the medium ones are versatile and excellent for slicing and grilling, and the big ones are ideal for stuffing or zucchini bread!

See everyone towards the end of the week!
