Veggie Share - Week 6

Posted on July 15th, 2019 by Kim Barker
This is always such an exciting time of the summer, when the harvest really begins to ramp up, summer veggies beginning to replace the spring ones. The first harvests of a crop are so fun - the first peas, the first carrots, the first tomatoes, zucchinis, beans (hopefully a couple weeks??), and so on. At the same time, we're always looking ahead, planning to make sure we have the crops we need in the fall. This week we are planting cabbages and winter radish, beets and carrots. Last week we planted potatoes and kohlrabi. It's strange to think of the fall, in the heat of the summer.

New this week: carrots and young onions! Young onions are onions that are harvested before they are fully mature. Use them like you would a regular onion! But the bonus is, you can still use the stem as a green onion. These are pretty awesome.

You might start seeing some tomatoes or zucchinis pop up in your share this week. The tomatoes are just getting started! When we don't have enough for everyone, Harvie places items in shares based on a random list order and preferences. So if you might not get them this week, but you might another week. We like using Harvie because it allows us this flexibility and to work with smaller harvests.

We had some helpers out today! Farming feels like a collaborative, community affair, and it always feels right when the farm is bustling with people. This year, Alex and I are testing our limits to see what we can accomplish on our own. But in the future, we plan to hire help and/or host interns.

Speaking of community - you are invited to our Garlic Harvest event! This will be on next Sunday, July 28th from 10-1, with a picnic afterwards. Even if you can't come out for the whole thing, or the harvest, we really encourage our members to come out for the picnic afterwards! We'll be having a farm tour and BBQing up some goodies. Here's the even link on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/events/557527048118889/
Hope to see you there!
