Week 12: Fall Crop Update (It's looking good!)

Posted on August 13th, 2022 by Katherine Nietmann

Welcome to Week 12!

Now that it finally looks like summer on the farm, we are of course tending to our fall and winter crops so there's no break in the food production on Moose Meadow Farm!  As farmers, we always have to think about and prepare for at least one whole season ahead.  Fall crops were planted in late spring or early summer, and now that it's high summer, we're seeding and transplanting our winter crops!

As for our fall crops, our onions are looking healthy and are sizing up nicely.  We're starting to offer red onions this week.  We will sell all of our yellow onions and shallots as fully cured storage crops, but the reds will be available as juicy, sweet, fresh onions!  The winter squash is also looking stellar:

We finally splurged and gave the plants primo field space and let it take up precious extra beds to ensure we'd have a good crop this year.  It's paying off!  The plants are huge and are loaded with fruit.  Our fall carrots are coming along nicely and there isn't a weed in sight due to our careful planning and use of silage tarps before planting.  Our fall brassicas are also growing quickly and look to be right on schedule for continuous harvests of kale, broccolini and cauliflower right up until the end of the CSA.

Finally, we managed to get out and pick some huckleberries last weekend and they were a huge hit with June!

Enjoy the produce and have a great week!
