Welcome to Week 8!

Posted on July 16th, 2022 by Katherine Nietmann

Welcome to Week 8!

This week we introduce heirloom tomatoes.  We also have loads of baby mustards and arugula, spinach and spring mix.  Lettuce heads are back, and we have loads of basil.

A note about our tomato varieties: though we call them heirloom tomatoes, they don’t actually fit the definition of “heirloom”.  We want you all to be informed about your food.  The varieties we grow are F1 hybrids; they are all crosses between heirloom varieties, which have the flavors, colors, and shapes that you associate with great tomatoes, and more vigorous, uniform and productive modern varieties.  The breeding creates tomatoes with excellent flavor (we certainly wouldn’t grow them if it didn’t!), better shelf life (so they don’t dissolve on your counter after a day), firmness, higher yields, and more uniform shapes than traditional heirlooms.  The heirloom-type beefsteak varieties that we grow are called Marnero (purple), Gin Fizz (yellow/red), Genuwine (red), Abigail (pink), Damsel (pink), and Kakao (brown). Now you know!

We’re in a bit of a flower lull at the moment as most of our spring planted high tunnel flowers have rotted in the high humidity we’ve been experiencing.  Still, June keeps an eye on our field flowers and they are coming soon!

Thanks again for your support and membership,
