What does Fall look like on the farm?

Posted on October 16th, 2021 by Katherine Nietmann

Welcome to Week 3!

What does fall look like on the farm?  It looks like a transition.  We're transitioning from harvesting summer hot crops and outdoor field crops to storage crops and high tunnel crops.  We're transitioning from short sleeved shirts and ball caps to multiple layers of fleece and wool and stocking caps.  We're transitioning from go-go-go-go mode to maybe-lunch-can-be-10-minutes-longer phase.  Plants (and humans alike) need a little extra protection from the elements and we're transitioning from constantly irrigating to pulling row cover over beds and making sure our heaters are working.  We're transitioning from opening the windows at night to let in cool night air, to lighting wood fires every morning because of that cool night air.

Our daughter June is coveting the last of the season's eggplant, and so are we!  Our favorite way to eat them right now is roasted on a sheet pan with sweet miso glaze.  You'll find a few units of glossy purple eggplants available this week, as well as a wide assortment of fall delicacies.  We'll be rolling out new crops weekly as we finish harvesting them.  Spring Mix will be back though it is conspicuously missing this week as we wait for the next planting to size up.

Enjoy the produce and the beautiful fall we're having!
