Farm Happenings mid-November 2018

Posted on November 12th, 2018 by Timothy Lyon

It's time for Winter share #1. Since May-October weekly shares ended we've spent Thursdays focussed on field work. This week will be spent packing stored and fresh harvested veg for you. In fact, we're already compiling the contents now and setting up Winter share schedules and background details for Dec-April too. And, we'll spend most of Weds root washing, drying, sorting and bagging veggies too.

In the field

In the field we've been bringing in all the final harvest, creating compost piles, packing down hardware for winter storage (irrigation, crop covers etc), digging root crops before hard freeze, emptying water out of all lines and containers, planning crop rotations for 2019 among other changes, and all that wearing a lot more layers to keep warm!

Alternate location

As the weather gets colder, into the sub-zero, our cooler at the Barn becomes less effective, and so does packing boxes there. So, we wil use an alternate location for packing and pickup Dec-April. That means (with the exception of Old Farm Fine Food, Pig&O, Bicycle Delivery and Home Delivery members) you'll have a new location to discover for pickup next month. We already store all excess veggies at our alternate location off Sir John A near Princess, and the cooler we have there is highly efficient and located in a warehouse suitable for aggregating and storing share contents prior to and during pickup. For this month, we will use the Barn.

Winter shares, recipes

Winter brings on many of the usual veg suspects in larger quantity, and some new ones too. The joy of a Winter share is having the fresh snap of well-stored veg, as well as the opportunity to make larger dishes such as soups and stews which can go in the fridge and be enjoyed for a week at a time, or frozen for future use. And, we know some of you will want to explore new recipes. While we're always here with new culinary ideas and to help you get the most out of your share, don't forget to use the tips from Harvie, and participate in the Members FB page for more ideas. There's also a bunch of videos on Harvie Youtube channel for you to look through to learn more about Harvie and us farmers in general, and about handy recipes.

New members welcome

This is a great time to give back to your farm(er)s by telling your contacts about us. Do make use of the Referral tab in your Harvie account which makes it easy for you to e-mail or send a link to someone, and gives both of you a $25 credit when they sign up (conditions apply - see Harvie).

Thanks again for eating with us, and we hope you absolutely love the produce, check out our other new items, and let us know how we can improve your local food eating experience! (And, any way you'd like to assist us / get involved on the farm.)
