May 24

G'day farm members!

An odd title for a mid-October farm mail you think? In the minds of many Canadians the growing season runs from May 24 until end of July or August.  When we really got into farming we realized that people eat year-round. Duh! So, we started planning our urban farm to provide fresh local produce year-round. Today, we still do that.

In order to have produce available all the time we do start with early Spring plantings. Before May 24th. But, the main things we do are grow Fall crops which persist and are harvested in the cool weather, and store vegetables which last a long time. The great part is that many of the vegetables come out tasting fresh, and even sweeter than they would have straight from the field. Why? As the weather turns cold these veggies store sugars in order to survive the cold.

So, while we get many people asking "How was the season?" anytime from August until Christmas, we offer you our farm members this knowledge so you may ask "How has the farm year been so far?," or "How are fall crops coming along?," "How is preparation for next year?," or "May I have a Winter Share?"

In the midst of Fall harvest we are preparing for 2019. And, we are preparing the food for your Winter shares. Get ready for more great food (monthly Nov-Apr)!
