Farm Happenings for November 3, 2022

Posted on November 1st, 2022 by Timothy Lyon

While there was a wait, the rain came. Only a few days after the cover crops were seeded. We farmers have to be patient by nature, or we'd lose our minds working with weather. So now we're rejoicing. One more crop should now be germinating. And the cover crops are special ones which we don't harvest to eat, but instead to feed our friend the soil. Our latest seeding included some more beds sown with a mix of peas, wheat and radish, and others sown solely with rye. The mix will Winter kill, in other words it won't endure the cold, but the rye should survive under the snow and continue to grow in the Spring. Then, when we're able in the Spring we will cut the cover crops down and incorporate them into the soil. In the interim, their root systems will provide habitat companionship for nematodes, worms, bacteria and a host of other beings who live in the soil.

To get those cover crops in we had to harvest the majority of what was left in the field, so we've taken out the beets, sunchokes and sundry others, and now have only some napa to remove.

As we've said before, we're excited to be already preparing the land for the food you'll eat with us in 2023!

Now, dig in to the food you receive this week, enjoying the fruits of 2022.
