It's garlic planting time and we are preparing the final beds of 17 we need ready. Some beds have already been prepared with manure, seeded with mustard greens and had the greens flail-mown and incorporated. Of those, some demonstrated poor soil quality and have been further amended with manure to improve fertility. We need 17 beds for garlic this year because it has rotated to the short (West) beds in the field. To gain the remaining number of beds we need, we've pulled the eggplant and peppers which have finished fruiting. (The nightshades drop their flowers once temperatures drop under 10C.)

In the meantime, we're grading and cracking garlic ready for planting. Garlic seed is garlic from the previous year graded by size and quality. And, we have to crack each head into individual cloves, as that it what we plant. Would you like to help us crack or plant garlic? Please get in touch and we'll show you the ropes as you work with us. Distanced work is possible.
