Farm Happenings for June 6, 2019

Posted on June 5th, 2019 by Timothy Lyon

Hi everyone, welcome to Main Street Urban Farm's 2019 CSA. We are grateful for you sharing in the growing of food in Kingston by getting a basket of produce from our urban farm. Harvie makes our farm lives easier by assisting with organizing CSA payments, harvest, communications and deliveries. And, it makes it easier for you by allowing easy payments, scheduling changes, item switches and so on. Do check out how Harvie works, and ask us/Harvie any questions - use the green Question mark on the Harvie site to ask support for help anytime. Also, join the Members Facebook page for more info, recipes, care for your produce and other handy tips. FYI: we have space in our CSA still, so please refer friends (we'll send you an e-mail on Friday to make it easy for you to do that over the weekend).

Please be aware that if you paid by credit card two functions are enabled: 1. Auto-renew (which allows you to renew into the next share season without doing anything else - you can click it off at any time in your Profile); and 2. Payment for changes and extras.

Our biggest change this year is the move away from single-use plastics. We're making a determined effort which we hope you'll embrace too. For us, it means we're changing the way we portion items, and how we ensure they stay fresh until they get to you. For you, it means you need to bring bags, containers, wax wraps and so on to pickup. To make this easier (because, with 3 kids, we know what it's like trying to get out of the house with everything you need), we suggest you assemble several CSA ready bags of bags and containers now so you always have one ready. That way, on CSA day you can grab a ready bag, and in between pickups you can cycle the bags and containers from your fridge back into the next ready-to-go bag.

Here's a snapshot of our farm Wednesday.

05:30 rise and shine (30 min sleep in to energize for the day), personal time

06:00 compose and send Happening, create Deliveries for this week (behind the scenes field check and stock taking has happened), prepare for Friday work bee

07:30 breakfast

08:00-12:30 field work includes planting onions, hoeing/weeding (it's Weedy Wednesday!), preparing high tunnels for tomatoes and cucumbers, carrot feeding and seeding, harvesting for CSA

12:30 lunch

13:00 greenhouse work: seeding, putting plants out to harden off before moving to high tunnels/field, transporting seedlings to field

15:30 CSA prep: washing bins, assembling harvest, preparing barn for packing

17:30 dinner (ok, so we *sometimes* have to do stuff after dinner, but this is the dream list, right?!)

We hope you enjoy your first share, AND welcome your feedback of any kind to help us make the CSA the best it can be to feed you!
