Broccoli and more on the way...

Posted on October 15th, 2022 by Brittany Reardon

A Saturday field walk revealed some crops coming along for the late fall and winter season. Broccoli, though much later than we were hoping for, is starting to head up finally. You'll see this hit share boxes in a couple of weeks and hopefully continue into the winter share season. Spinach is planted in several successions and will be a late fall crop for us. We had trouble germinating greens during the summer's dry spell and this caused a delay for spinach as well.

Cauliflower is in boxes from Lancaster Farm Fresh, along with plenty of carrots, celery, cilantro, cabbage, napa cabbage, watermelon radish, and lots of others.  Beets will return to the list in a couple of weeks as we wait for the last planting to size up.

If you haven't had watermelon radishes, they are delicious roasted, with a denser texture than a red radish when cooked. Preparing them raw is also an excellent choice as they add a pop of color to salads, atop a sandwich, or on a raw veggie plate.

TURKEYS! Don't forget to place your order for a Thanksgiving Turkey from Nine Pines! $5/lb, GMO free, and pasture raised with love by our friends James and Becky. These are on the smaller end at 12-15 lbs for your small gathering. Or, get two turkeys for a large group! November 1 is the last day to reserve your turkey.

WOOD CHIPS! If you or someone you know has a tree business, we're looking for all the wood chips we can get, dropped off at the farm. If you're getting any tree work done, please mention this to the company you're working with. This will help us mulch our beds for next season.

WINTER SHARES! Winter shares are now live on our site! One standard size, 11 deliveries. Select locations. Milk, meat, eggs and honey shares are also available. We're offering a $20 discount to all our fall CSA members who join for the winter on or before November 15. Enter code WINTER22 at check out for your discount. Enjoy delicious, fresh local produce through the cold season!

Please note that we are moving towards a PAY X payment plan for all CSA shares. This means that you will "pay as you go" instead of paying 25% of your share at sign up. You will pay for TWO deliveries at sign up, and the remaining deliveries will be paid weekly. The goal is to help us with our farm cash flow for the entire year, as well as help YOU with your family's budgeting from week to week. Our plan is to eventually move to PAY X for the main season shares as well. Your commitment as a CSA member will help us make this transition, and allow us to grow more food for our community. Thank you so much for choosing MRF to help feed your family!
