Lettuce Is Back!

Posted on February 8th, 2022 by Brittany Reardon

One of the things that we've struggled with, since moving to the farm but especially in recent months, is internet service. We have tried several different options and companies, and none of them have offered a reliable service. Getting internet service to our business and home in (somewhat?) rural PA seemed to be an increasingly challenging task. After we tried the various hot spot options that are available with no luck, we decided to finally take the plunge and have Comcast run a line from the road down to our house. We were avoiding this option because of the expense, but it became clear that this was going to be our best bet if we wanted to consistently be able to work from our home, which is necessary to running our farm business.

So today is our first day with new internet, and we're so relieved to finally have it! We also feel grateful for our CSA members and customers for supporting us and helping us get to this point. We hope that this is just the beginning!!

For this week, lettuce mix is back, so it's time for those long-awaited winter salads! (That's definitely what I'll be eating very soon) There's also lots of spinach and greens mix (mizuna, arugula, red russian kale, lettuce and spinach mix) which make great salads too. Kale and carrots are coming out of the field, while we have supplemented potatoes and other storage veggies from local organic growers to get through the winter months. Our plan as we build the soil and put more beds into production is that we will have plenty of our own root crops stored to last the winter.

A note about beef:

The ground beef that we had available in the last share is from cows that are finished on grain (they still are out on pasture during the season and get grass/hay as their main feed). I apologize as this wasn't specified explicitly in the item line, and this beef can be quite different if you're used to 100% grass-fed and finished beef. We have sourced 100% grass fed from our friends at Flying Plow Farm (Rising Sun MD) this week, so that's what you'll see on the list now.
