Summer's Here and Tomatoes are Coming...

Posted on July 2nd, 2021 by Brittany Reardon

The tomato plants are looking great in the hoophouse and the field, we're waiting on the first fruits to start ripening. We're excited about digging the first potatoes of the season this coming week! The first variety up is Red Norland, which has a beautiful red-pink skin and white flesh. They're perfect for making potato salad or mashed potatoes. You'll also see celery in this week's share, which is a crop we have been looking forward to for awhile. Fresh homegrown celery is so starkly different from the celery you find at the grocery store. It comes with the leaves still on the top of the stalks, which I like to use in whatever I'm cooking - particularly in salads or soups.

You might remember that we offer u-pick crops to members as part of the CSA share. There's a few crops that are ready for picking down in the upick field. At first these will be very limited but as the flowers bloom in larger numbers, and the herbs start to take over the beds we will have more for everyone to pick. When you come to the farm to pick up your share, we can show you where to go to cut zinnias/cosmos, plus perennial herbs like sorrel, lemon balm, chamomile and chives. There will also be a map in the farm stand - just don't forget to bring some scissors or clippers if you're planning to cut some herbs/flowers!

Recipe Ideas

Herbed Potato Salad - this recipe has several things in the share this week (onions, red potatoes, parsley, garlic) and is perfect for summer meals! Basil and chives would also make good additions to increase the herb-y flavor of this delicious potato salad. You could even add a bit of celery, too!

Summer Squash and Basil Saute - this is one of the simplest recipes I've ever seen, but squash and basil is such a classic summer combo (although not as classic as basil and tomato, but we're still waiting for that!). Simple is usually better, right??
