CSA Week 14 - Happy Labor Day!

Happy Labor Day from your farmers. I hope you and your family can find a cool spot this weekend to celebrate your good works. Your trusty farmers will be working to make sure our food is ready for you-- This is what we do. We labor to feed our community, and we invite you to raise a glass to celebrate all farmers, not just yours here at Kilt.

Even though it still feels like summer (what a hot week it has been), we are at the intersection of summer and fall crops. We are harvesting peppers, eggplants, tomatoes and all of the summer crops this week. The winter squash has finally been lifted from the fields and are we are beginning the curing process. The fall crops are sizing up and look amazing even in this record breaking heat. I am excited about our soon-to-be-harvested red bell peppers and sweet Italian peppers while also harvesting Napa cabbage and the first of our fall radishes. Now if this is not the most grand overlap of food, I don't know what is.

As I'm sure you have already gathered, 2022 has been a hard year on the farm. We have endured weather anomalies from record heat to hail, and have been chronically short-staffed. But we remain grateful: We have some wonderful new faces here joining us in the fields, and the entire farm staff is working hard to insure the bounty of the season is not lost. Through the challenges we are keeping our heads held high, and we're all thrilled to see the quality of food that we get to put in your CSA shares each week. We are even more happy to be able to eat it right alongside with you.

Have an amazing Labor Day weekend. If you drive by the farm on Monday, please lift our spirits by giving us a good honking.

- Michael and all of the farmers of Kilt Farm

Product Highlights

Fairy Tale Eggplant

These little guys are definitely a fan favorite -- Easy to prepare, concentrated flavor and nutrition, and of course cute as a button! Fairy Tales have a more delicate and soft skin than your average eggplant, making them easier to prepare in the kitchen.

This veggie is perfect for sautéing, throwing in a stir fry, roasting & puréeing into velvety Baba Ganoush, and let's not forget our favorite way to prepare them: grilling! The versatility of these tasty eggplants makes creating a unique & delicious dish practically effortless. They don't need much-- A little extra virgin olive oil, salt, and pepper will do the trick and let the flavor of these Fairy Tales shine.

Sauce Tomatoes

The long-awaited sauce tomatoes are coming in hot! As tomato season continues to roll in, we are beginning to bring 15 lb flats of sauce tomatoes to the table. These tomatoes are perfect for canning and bulk preparations for the winter: Have a day with the family and make batches of soups + sauce to freeze so you are prepared all winter long with plenty of gravy for your warm pasta dinners. We are also offering bulk basil so you can bring your soups and sauces to life with some fresh herbs.

15 lb flats will go for $30 and will be "dealers choice" of juicy slicing tomatoes and slightly-sweeter orange tomatoes. Psst-- Test out your sauce recipes with some awesome Pastificio Pasta this week!

Fruit Share

This week's fruit share will be 6 lbs of Starfire Nectarines. Crisp, juicy, and the perfect cure to your sweet tooth!

As always these will also be available as add-ons alongside Cresthaven Peaches for those of you without a fruit share.

We may be nearing the end of the stone fruits and entering the season of pears and apples, but there's still time for making jams and preserves! So not to worry, we will be offering peaches and nectarines as 20 lb boxes for all of you canning folks out there! We encourage you to give canning a go-- We promise it's a whole lot of fun, and the "fruits" of your labor will be absolutely worth it.

Add-ons and Extras

And lest we forget: Support our neighboring partners and check out our SkyPilot pasture raised eggs, Pueblo Seed & Food Co grains and goodies, organic Hazel Dell Mushrooms, heirloom Pastifio pasta, and beautiful Fresh Herb Co bouquets!

We hope you enjoy this week's CSA, and we hope you enjoy a safe Labor Day weekend with family, friends, and good food.
