CSA Week 11 - Peppers, Peaches, and Melons, Oh My!

View from the Tractor

It is official, we have made it to the darn dog days of summer. The heat has been hard on all of us as we fight the weeds, harvest all of the crops, and do our best to keep our heads up with a smile on or faces. This is the time of year when my words of encouragement to the staff and my own self-talk is focused on the fall. Cooler temperatures are right around the corner. The days are getting shorter. The weeds will soon be less of a challenge. The harvests will become easier and soon we will rest. I am not sure how much it really helps, but I do know that I can see the cycle of the season shifting, little by little.

This week we have started to really get into the pepper harvest. Bells, shishitos, jalapeño, Serranos are coming in hot, and now we are even bringing in Anahiems. I love pepper season. Cayla makes an amazing sweet pepper jam and frozen green chili cubes that lets us have that amazing pepper flavor all winter long!

We also went through and harvested the first of the melons of the season. Tossing melons out of the field is a summer tradition that really lets you feel how tired your body is, but is followed by the sweet reward of knowing the melons are finally here. We will have some amazing cool & fresh melons for you to sample at tomorrow's open farm event. We will also have a melon for your shares next week.

It's been another long week here on the farm, but we are keeping our chins up and we remain forever grateful to have such a wonderful Kilt Farm family-- and that includes you.

Have a great weekend and stay cool.

Michael

Farm Party Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the day we finally get to swing the gates open and share our sweet little farm with you all. This Saturday August 13th, come swing by the farm anytime between 10AM and 2PM for hayrides (perfect for the kiddos), tasty farm snacks, refreshing beverages (both alcoholic and nonalcoholic will be available), and community gathering! Visitors will be able to walk around the farm to witness all of the magic growth happening, and hayride tours will roll through the event as people come and go.

The event will be at our Oxford property: 8140 Oxford Rd. Longmont, CO 80503

Fruit Share

The Fruit Share this week will be Honey Glo Nectarines and Sun Drop Peaches.

We are so excited to bring some nectarines to the table this week– Honey Glos are typically late-bloom, so we are in for a real (sweet) treat. With crispy red skin and tender yellow flesh, these nectarines are bound to cure your sweet tooth with some juice dripping down your chin!

Add-Ons

The Sun Drop peaches are back! And this week, we’re offering 20# boxes of these delightful orchard offerings. As a freestone fruit, these peaches are absolutely perfect for preserving & canning

Canning peaches can be done with sugar, fruit juice, or even honey. We love this easy step-by-step recipe from Sustainable Cooks if you are looking for a simple guide to start canning this year.

Fun fact about preserved peaches:  Canning peaches is not only sustainable, but a great way to boost the nutrient density of the fruit. Studies show the canning process actually opens up the cell walls of the peaches’ flesh, making vitamins and minerals more accessible and attainable for the human body to absorb and process. How cool is that?!

…And of course: Don’t forget to prep your kitchen cabinets with spices and goodies from Pueblo Seed & Co, level up your breakfast game with SkyPilot Eggs, grill some Hazel Dell mushrooms for a delicious supper side, make a tasty granola with our Raw Honey, and bring some color to your home with Fresh Herb & Co’s beautiful bouquets.

We hope to see you this weekend and we hope you enjoy your next CSA share! Wishing you a nourishing week filled with community, laughter, good health, and of course– good food.
