CSA Week 8 - The Peak of the Season is Upon Us

Welcome to the peak of the season: The time of year where we work double-time in the blistering heat to keep up with Mother Nature while tending to the fields. The busiest weeks of the season have arrived, and needless to say, we are tired. But during this time we are also reminded to the beauty of farming: The soil is bursting with life and the crops are coming in hot, and although the days might be long, the work remains rewarding.

Even though we are short-staffed, the team is working their tails off to keep up with the overload of tasks this time of year requires. Harvesting, planting, and preparing our organic veggies has been a struggle to keep up with-- Summer crops are being harvested in abundance, fall crops are being planted like no other, and all in extreme temperatures ranging from the 90°s to 100°s. Kholrabi, dill, and so much more (even our highly anticipated melons) are rising out of the ground and growing in abundance. There has also been an incredible amount of tending to the soil, preparing new beds as we rotate crops, and weeding-- And when we say weeding, we mean lots & lots of weeding.

It's a lot to keep track of and a lot to tend to, but the work is getting done. We take each day as it comes and we get through it knowing that this work leads to nutrient-dense and delicious food landing on the tables of the Kilt Farm family: You are the reason we get through this, and each of you play a huge role in why this work is so rewarding.

We hope you enjoy this week's offerings. Thank you again for keeping us going and for all of your support.

Product Highlights

As the summer sun persists, the team has been persevering through the heat. The fruits of their labor really shows as we are harvesting more colorful varieties of organic veggies to put in your shares. This week you will see the beginning harvests of eggplants-- classic Italian, perfect-for-grilling Orient Express, and of course sweet little Fairy Tale eggplants! The long-awaited cherry tomatoes and slicing tomatoes are beginning to kickoff as well as we continue to dive into the peak of the summer season.

We are also bringing in a wider variety of summer squashes-- Dunja, Romanesco, Gold Bar, and multi-colored Patty Pan squashes are abundantly popping out from the ground and flourishing in the fields. These summer squashes, eggplants, and even the tomatoes are perfect for summer grilling with neighbors and friends, roasting for nourishing and vibrant side dishes, and let's not forget eggplant parmesan or fresh sliced summer squash & tomatoes for salads! There is so much more to come and so much more to look forward to.

Fruit Share

This week's fruit share will be 5 lbs of mouth-watering Red Haven Peaches from the orchards of the Western Slope! These peaches are less fuzzy and more firm, have juicy and sweet fruit flesh, and are freestones-- which makes them perfect for grilling, canning, and baking.

A reminder that if you are signed up for a Fruit Share, you do not need to add peaches as an extra or add-on (unless if you want more peaches, of course) since the fruit share already accounts for your Red Havens for the week.

And don't forget: If you don't have a Fruit Share, you can still add on some ripe & juicy Red Haven peaches in 2 lb bags. Nothing screams summer like peaches.

Extras and Add-Ons

If you haven't tried our farm-fresh eggs from SkyPilot or our heirloom wheat pasta from Pastificio, this is your sign to add them to your share this week! We have received wonderful reviews on these farm-fresh and artisanal goods-- and we couldn't agree with them more! We are so fortunate to be able to partner with such amazing producers and farmers for our CSA this year.

Boost your CSA with incredible eggs for breakfast, nutrient-dense pasta for dinner (it's pasta salad time of year!), or any of our other tasty offerings like our raw honey, organic Hazel Dell Mushrooms, or spices and goodies from Pueblo Seed & Co.

We cannot wait to share this week's harvest with you. It is a joy knowing that soon these crops will become incredible meals and feed so many of you out there.
