CSA Week 6 - Serious Heat Edition

Posted on July 8th, 2022 by Michael Moss

View from the Tractor

The season has been a wild one for sure. At the beginning of the year the worry was that we would have no water-- And as nature would have it, the water came running down the hills so fast that excess water is filling parts of the farm. We have had crazy heat followed by insane cold and now back to the blistering hot sun. I guess it is all driving me a little crazy. Luckily for us, the heat-loving summer crops are just down-right excited for all of this sun and water-- So much so that we are going to be able to slowly start adding summer squash and some early eggplants to the CSA. We even have a few cherry tomato pints and some red slicing tomatoes. This is just a little taste of what is to come.

Our summer fields of peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers look amazing. I am sure the weekend will bring a huge explosion in growth. So exciting! And as we move deeper into the summer, we will continue planting our fall crops so the amazing food will just keep flowing.

Thank you for being a part of our farm. You are the reason we are all sweating hard in the fields growing food.

Fruit Share Update

We have some exciting news - The orchards of the Western Slope farmers are blossoming much sooner than was anticipated this year, so we have decided to make some changes as the seasons shift. We are now starting the FRUIT SHARE 2 WEEKS EARLY!

Here's what you need to know:

  • The fruit share will now begin the week of July 19th.
  • You can still add fruit to your order as an add-on before the Fruit Share begins and till the end of the season.
  • If you already signed up for a Fruit Share, there will be a shift in your Upcoming Deliveries section on your Harvie Profile once Harvie has updated the new dates of the Fruit Share for the farm. This may not happen right away, but be on the lookout.
  • Going on vacation or have plans to be out of town in the coming weeks? Please make sure you check your upcoming deliveries once Harvie has updated the schedule to ensure your Fruit Shares have been accounted for.
  • If you have not signed up for a Fruit Share yet, it's not too late

Add-Ons

Peaches

Speaking of fruit... Rising Star Peaches are joining Perfection Apricots as one of our Fruit Add-Ons for the week. Welcome the summer stone-fruits and grab a 2 lb bag of organic Rising Star Peaches to add on to your share!

These semi-freestone peaches are an early season treat-- Crisp & juicy flesh, delicious & balanced sweetness, and the perfect fresh bite to cool off in the summer heat. Throw some peaches in a summer pie, fold into a homemade breakfast pastry, throw in some yogurt or on top of ice cream, toss in a fruit salad (with your apricots, of course), bring color to your cheese board, or eat on-the-go for a refreshing snack.

Eggs

Skypilot Eggs - Our dear friends at Skypilot Farm have been providing spectacular eggs for us to offer in our CSA this year. We are so grateful and excited to be able to share these with you, we've been thrilled by the feedback we've received this season from our egg-lovers out there. These tend to sell out fast, and there's good reason: More delicious than any pasture-raised egg you can find at the supermarket along with colorful yolks bursting with flavor, there aren't too many eggs out there like the eggs from Skypilot. You can really taste the difference!

Supporting local farmers who create the most nourishing and happy environment for their hens is something that we find incredibly important. Healthier and happier hens means tastier eggs that are more nutrient-dense. And to top it all, supporting farmers like Skypilot is voting for the change that agriculture so desperately needs: sustainability.

We are proud to offer these eggs and partner with folks like Skypilot to help bring sustainability to the breakfast table (or dinner table, even) of our members.

And don't forget the rest!

As always, we will continue offering Kilt Farm raw honey, Pastificio pasta, Pueblo Seed & Co heirloom grain goods, Hazel Dell mushrooms, and beautiful bouquets of Fresh Herb Co flowers.

We hope you enjoy this weeks share! Wishing all of you nourishment, community, and good food.
