Sign o' the Times

Posted on September 2nd, 2018 by John Eisenstein

Well, we finally installed a sign for our farm lane, so that anyone who wants to visit us will have an easy time knowing where to go.  It only took us 13 and a half years after moving here in 2005 to do so.  However, it is an exceptionally beautiful sign, if I say so myself.  Its pictured above.  My sister in law Patsy made it with the help of her husband Glen.  Thanks guys!

Just a few days after we put it up, it had a baby.  I didn't know signs could do that, but here's the proof:

Actually I suspect it was the work of two young musicians who worked here part time this summer.  One of them can play the clarinet better than anyone who can pick okra faster than she can.  The other can pick okra faster than anyone who can play the flute better than she can.  You wouldn't naturally expect musicians to be cut out for farm work, but I assure you, this is a prejudice-- both of them worked quickly and well, without complaining despite the difficult conditions brought on by the bizarre weather this summer.  It was a pleasure working with them-- truly, one of the best parts of my job is getting to know wildly different people from all walks of life by working with them-- but I have absolutely NO IDEA where the flying fruit allusion comes from!

New this week is broccolini, which means "little broccoli" in Italian.  Here's a picture:

That's all the bigger the flower heads get.  Though small, it has the redeeming virtue of having very tender stalks and leaves, so the entire thing can be used.  Just wash, chop or not as desired, and add heat by your preferred method to cook.  We almost have enough for everyone this week, but if you are one of the unlucky few who didn't get one, fear not, thereis more on the way.  Other fall crops are starting to come in too.  I was going to have a picture of a kale field too, but the photo seems to be stuck between my camera and computer.  It's just as well, the field is a little weedy anyways.  Here's a picture of some kiwiberries instead:

The quarter is just there to give you an idea of size and is not included in the kiwi order.  We do have enough of these for everybody, if Harvie didn't give you any, AND you are unable to swap for them despite your ardent wishes for kiwiberries, let me know.  These smooth (and edible) skinned relatives of the more common fuzzy kiwis are truly delicious, HOWEVER they must be soft before you eat them!  Or they won't be delicious at all.  To ripen, simply leave on the counter until they are soft.  They won't all ripen at once,so check each berry daily.
