Farm Happenings for October 11, 2023

Posted on October 8th, 2023 by Mark Kastner
We experienced light frost this morning. Except for some Strawberries that we couldn't cover because of the wind, we don't have anything left exposed except some lettuce, and it will take a much heavier frost to affect that crop! Growing out in Autumn is always somewhat risky and we were prepared as the first frost is pretty much on time. The outdoor Kale, Cabbage, Brussels Sprouts, and Broccoli actually need a little more frost in order to sweeten up!

This is the last week that we will plant flats for late fall/ early Winter transplants. I will be busy converting the greenhouses to cold weather production, repairs, and infrastructure improvements. I will start a few early Tomatoes in the nursery on December 18, but the planting schedule really begins on January 22, with a full slate of Onion varieties before I move to fruiting crops mid February 2023!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon and the Allen Street Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up and scheduled home deliveries, and Saturday I am in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery on Bridge Street in Grand Ledge, 11:00 AM-12:00 noon. Please review the attached menu and let me know if I can help! Thank you,
