Farm Happenings for July 6, 2022

Posted on July 3rd, 2022 by Mark Kastner

Good morning!

We won't offer Baby Lettuce Mix for about 3 more weeks. While all lettuce tends to be a bit more bitter in the heat of Summer, I think the current bed exceeds my preference limits. If necessary, we'll protect the  succession lettuce under shade cloth!

Our Beekeeper, Maggie, brought us a third hive and all the bees are very busy! Honeybees won't enter the hoop houses because the enclosure confuses their navigation systems. Since we grow a high percentage of fruiting crops (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers) indoors, i am adding a colony of bumblebees inside to assist with pollination. The honeybees are doing an amazing job outside on fruits like melons, zucchini, and English cucumbers!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 2:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market in Lansing after that, 2:30-6:30.Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday we are in Grand Ledge for the Market on the Grand, 9:00-1:00. I anticipate that we'll have fruit at the markets and in our CSA fruit shares, but with this crazy hot and dry weather, I cannot predict what! I hope to see you soon.
