Farm Happenings for September 29, 2021

Posted on September 26th, 2021 by Mark Kastner

Good morning!

Although farmers are constantly cautious, if not pessimistic when talking about the current crop conditions, I think most of us are secretly optimistic. We are always taking notes for changes due next year that will make it the best growing season ever! Knowing better from experience, we sometimes think that the Autumn seasonal changes will somehow relax and let us do just one more harvest of that warm weather crop like Tomatoes or Cucumbers.

Then reality enters like the two rainy cold days last week with overnight lows in the mid 40's--definitely not fruiting weather! As I peaked in to see how the Tomatoes were doing the poor plants were all brown and shouting "We're done"! Ditto with the Cucumbers, and now I am two weeks behind converting and transplanting the hoop houses for Winter production! This job is so much fun!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday  at 12:00 noon and the Allen Street Market located at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Fairview Street, 2:30-6:30 after that.Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday, October 2, we are at the Market on the Grand in Grand Ledge, 9:00-1:00. October 9, is the Grand Ledge Fall Festival, and the last market appearance for the year at JC Park. Saturday October 16, we'll begin our CSA and ordered drop offs in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery for the Fall and Winter/ Spring seasons. Please see the attached menu for what we expect to offer, and let me know if I can help!

Thank you,
