Farm Happenings for September 25, 2021

Posted on September 22nd, 2021 by Mark Kastner

Good Morning!

Cool nights usher in the "curing" of the cool brassica crops like Brussels Sprouts, Winter Squash, Broccoli and more! The shorter days also bring on the demise of many summer fruiting crops such as Tomatoes, Peppers, Cucumbers and the like. I still have a second planting of some Tomatoes and Cucumbers, and a few Peppers, but  their days are certainly numbered.

A farmers market last year on September 30, featured a cold hard driving rain according to my notes. Not much fun, but a reminder of things to come! Most of the focus now iis holding transplants in the nursery while we convert the big hoops from summer to winter production.

We'll begin offering Potatoes, Storage Onions and carrots in September. The Apple, Pear, and Grape crops are coming along, and the leafy Lettuce and other greens that we are replacing from the damaging August heat wave will be offered soon!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday, at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Market, Michigan Avenue at Fairview after that, 2:30-6:30. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday we are still in Grand Ledge 9:00-1:00 at JC Parkon the river. That Market on the Grand will last for 3 more weeks.

Please see the attached menu and let me know if I can help. I hope to see you soon!

Thank you,
