Farm Happenings for August 4, 2021

Posted on August 1st, 2021 by Mark Kastner

Hello!

We will offer all of nature's  Summer  bounty through most of September, but the transition to Autumn/ Winter CSA Memberships has already begun! The next Sign Up for Autumn/ Winter that begins September 1 will begin in a couple of weeks. We will not offer Fruit Shares next session but will offer Seasonal Fruit each week as an "add-on".

We hope to "pull plastic"  over the 3 mid-sized hoop houses so we can prepare the soil with compost and Ground Fabric for weed control, as the transplants grow in the nursery. One will be a dedicated  Spinach house, the second one for overwintered Kale and the third will nourish greens that grow into Winter, but can't make it through!

Those of you that attend our Farmers Markets will  recognize Alanna, that cheery helper that knows a lot about your food. That girl helps harvest and then washes and packs almost all of our tasty, chemical free produce; she knows what's going on! She's also training some of our newer staff on what she does, as she leaves for school in about 10 days. Alanna has been with us for the better part of 3 years and has helped make Hillcrest Farms a better place to grow great food. Talk about transition!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday, at 12:00 noon and the Allen Street Farmers Market, located on Michigan Avenue at Fairview after that, 2:30 - 6:30. Thursday is farm pick up, and Saturday we are in Grand Ledge for the Market on the Grand at JC Park, 9:00 - 1:00. Please review the attached menu and let me know if I can help!
