Farm Happenings for July 31, 2021

Posted on July 28th, 2021 by Mark Kastner

Hello!

Growing in protected cultures (like hoop houses) allows me to extend the growing seasons earlier as well as later in the normal production cycles. Add to that, we can grow all winter! The fruiting vegetables began with Cucumbers in May, followed by Tomatoes in mid June, and now more Peppers. Outside the Melons and Summer Squash follow their natural cycles, as we are transplanting indoors to extend the Autumn Bounty!

Maggie, our beekeeper, drew a good sized amount of honey from our new hives Saturday, and said that the first draw was as good as she's tasted. Those bees must like all the pollen that we have around here, and we like their help with our fruiting crops. We do not mark up the price of our honey. I want Maggie to be properly compensated for the wonderful job that she does, I want Hillcrest Farms to be associated with high quality products, and I want our customers to experience the amazing differences associated with chemical free growing practices!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market located on Michigan Avenue at Fairview Street 2:30 - 6:30 after that. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up for pre ordered requests. Saturday we are in Grand Ledge for the Market on the Grand, 9:00 - 1:00. Please see the attached menu for most of our produce available this week and let me know if I can help!

Note: we will continue to offer the finest Michigan Fruits available as add-ons, to CSA Members and Customer orders. We no longer offer stand alone Fruit orders.

Thank you,
