Baby it's COLD outside..

Posted on February 3rd, 2023 by Stacey Taggart

Whew! It's been COLD!  I'm sure we're all feeling it...  We've reached as low as -29.6 degrees here at the farm.  Yikes!  The only bright spot is that hopefully it is cold enough to reach all the squash bugs and other nefarious bugs who burrowed and hibernated around the farm last fall.  They somehow can tuck themselves away and often the cold doesn't reach them, hibernating until spring comes, and then begin to wreak their havoc once again.  But we're hoping that as cold as it's gotten, it's too cold for them to survive and hopefully we'll notice a difference in pest pressure in the coming months.  As you know, we don't use or rely on harsh and harmful chemicals to keep bad bugs at bay - we use predatory bugs or "good" bugs, and other natural measures, which takes a lot of time yet we often still lose crops from bug damage.  So we're hopeful that this arctic weather will have some good with it!  With the extreme cold temps though, we won't have any greens or salad mixes this month for our offerings but we will have radish sprouts for an extra kick of green freshness! We will have more frozen chopped bell peppers as well as some winter squash choices and of course our root veggies. For extras we'll have, among other things, some delicious black bean and pumpkin chili... so nice on a cold night!
