Summer Week 3

Posted on June 7th, 2019 by Stacey Taggart

We've had some very hungry caterpillars in Ernie (one of our hoophouses).  The children's book is cute (Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar), but in really life, it's such a nuisance.  The last cold snap, we closed up Ernie to protect the crops from a potential frost, and that raised the temperature in the hoophouse quite a bit, which must have been a haven for the little pests.  Our chard, spinach, collard greens, cabbage and lettuces got hit the worst.  You've probably noticed your veggies have been a little extra holy and hopefully you didn't also receive a "friend" in your box as well... We're taking measures to find natural solutions to deter the little guys since we don't use any chemicals.
