Farm Happening for the Week of July 20th

Posted on July 19th, 2020 by Brendan Prewitt

NOTE: We've been having some questions about the Farm Stand emails some of you are receiving. This is designed as an on-demand option for people to purchase a weekly share after all of our members have had their shares filled. If you are receiving these emails, it is likely that at some point in the past you signed up for the Farm Stand list. Since you are already receiving a box through your Veggie Box membership, we'd encourage you to disregard these emails, unless you'd like to receive a second box.

Likewise, if you purchased a Greens Share add-on, please note that you should be receiving two emails each week for customization, one for customizing your main share and the other for the greens share. The option on our end was to either make the greens share non-customizable (as it was last year) or to allow customization (something many of you asked for last year) but requiring a second email for that customization, so we chose the latter.

Do know that we are fully aware of the issues some of you are having with Harvie, as we, too, are having significantly more issues than we did last year with them. We understand it can come across very complicated at times and it is something that we're giving serious thought to as we look at future seasons; but hopefully everyone's experiences so far have been good. Harvie has a lot of merit for the problems it intends to solve (customization, convenience, etc.), but sometimes it seems to get a bit too complex to say it's just a box of veggies.

For those of you who didn't have a delivery last week, here's last week's farm happening: https://www.harvie.farm/happenings/harvest-thyme-farm/16507/farm-happening-for-the-week-of-july-13th

How about that weather yesterday/this morning? Hope everyone escaped unscathed; while things got a little beat up with the 3.5" of rain and lots of wind, it looks like we avoided any serious issues here. After all the crazy heat we've had this summer without any real rain, I guess maybe we were due for it; though, all of it in a 24 hour period was a bit much! Doesn't look like we'll be needing to water for at least a few days!

Other than that, things are continuing to progress nicely around here. We're excited to see our first outdoor tomatoes ripening - we made some significant changes to how we grow them outside this year and it sure seems to have paid off. We typically don't begin harvesting the outdoor tomatoes until late August/early September, so it looks like the changes paid off and we'll begin harvesting the first few this week. In a good year they're our favorite tomatoes to grow, and so far, things are looking pretty good!

Garlic harvest is almost here, so now we need to set aside the time to get all 4,000+ plants out of the ground and into the barn on the other property to cure for a few weeks. It's always a bit of a challenge this time of year to throw big day-long projects like this into the mix, as there are already too many things to realistically get done in a week, even with six of us working here. Nonetheless, we'll make it happen, because leaving it in the ground longer than we should will start causing bigger problems with bulbs cracking open, etc.

The 100+ chicks arrived this past Monday and are doing well. Of course, the Post Office delivered them to the wrong person, so we had to get that sorted out first (people always find it funny that they come through the Post Office - it's actually the only legal way to deliver live poultry, short of a delivery straight from the hatchery). They've sure had an eventful week with all of this weather, but they seem to have taken it in stride.

Well, we'll leave it here for the week - time to go harvest the never-ending cucumbers/zucchini!

Have a good week!
