Farm Happening for the Week of June 15th

Posted on June 14th, 2020 by Brendan Prewitt

We've finally hit the first week of our main season, which means a lot of you are joining us for the first time this season, so welcome!

If you're just joining us or have missed either of the last two farm happenings, here are the links to catch up if you want to:

We were lucky enough to escape yet another frost a couple nights ago that some other farms were dealing with around here and the forecast looks great finally! The winds last week were challenging, we lost a few plants outside that just couldn't fight them, but overall, we fared just fine. To say we're excited for the upcoming week of sunshine, moderate temperatures and light winds is probably an understatement.

We're excited to start seeing things come alive out there; cucumbers are starting to size up in the hoophouses and should be finding their way into boxes likely next week, pea flowers are just starting to emerge and zucchini are about to kick in. Garlic scapes are just starting to form which means the garlic is well on it's way to forming bulbs.

We're excited to already have tomatoes forming on our outside plants; we planted some extra large plants extra early as a trial and it's working great. Of course, they're not quite as large as our hoophouse tomatoes, but the usually we're not starting to harvest the outside tomatoes until mid-late September, which doesn't look like it'll be the case this year. The same goes for peppers, we trialed an early planting of them and with flowers already open, we should be on track for some earlier peppers too. Given this year definitely wasn't the best year for early trials with the crazy variability in weather, we're pretty excited about them!

Aside from things being a bit slow from the weather, we're pretty excited for everything else; we're on top of our weed game this year and everything's looking pretty awesome out there for this time of year.  Our final employee will be joining us this week, so we'll be running at full speed. Between some new equipment purchases and some awesome employee, we're excited for where we're at this season.

One of the biggest contributors to how far ahead we are this year is that we didn't build much infrastructure at all this spring, which means we could devote time to keeping everything else on track. Of course, we can't go a whole year without building something, so we've got some ambitious mid-summer/fall construction plans in the works now that we're finally settled on the new property. Fortunately, we've got an ambitious crew that's ready to tackle whatever we throw at them!

Well, it's too nice out for you to be sitting here reading this (or for us to be here writing it, for that matter), so we'll leave it here for the week! If anyone has any questions about their delivery, just let us know!
