Gravel Road Farm News, August 6 2022

Green beans will be in the box again this week, plus lots of the same amazing vegetables we’ve been having. The hot humid weather is ideal for certain plants. Melons are just about ready. There may be a few going out this week, but we are cautious so that we don’t over promise. Tomatoes from the high tunnel are producing every day. We pick them a few times a week and then are able to select the best ripened ones for your boxes. The tendersweet summer cabbage is still coming out of the field, ready for your slaw and other raw or lightly cooked cabbage recipes.

Turner's sweet corn is on the list this week! It is allocated four ears at a time to make it easy for everyone to get the amount that works for them. We also have some microgreens available from our friends at Summers Garden. Be sure to swap them in or add them on if you're interested.

Eggplants are looking beautiful and are also in the high tunnel. We'll include them next time. Zucchinis are starting to slow down as the bugs take their toll, so there are fewer available. Beets are done for a short time also, until the next planting is ready.

The winter squash and pumpkin plantings are about 3 weeks behind from the cool spring, but they have grown so much in just the last two weeks. We are still hopeful for a nice crop before the CSA ends.

Be sure to check out the extras/swaps section so that you can customize your box.

The deer are still trying to get into the vegetable fields, but we are out there nightly picking when it is cooler, and hopefully deterring them a little. The weeds are definitely taking over some of our plantings. We just don’t have time to weed everything. We just love planting, and growing, so we may have over done it on some things.

The flower patch looks well picked, and a little bit tired. There will be just enough for the next three weeks of bouquets, plus our markets, flower stand, and special events.

There is still time to come out to the farm for a quick farm tour but time is running out. All CSA customers get a free farm tour in the summer, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are our best days. When school begins, we will only be able to have tours on the Sundays.
