Farm Happenings for June 28, 2022

Posted on June 25th, 2022 by Ross Ferkett

Apologies for the late launch of this CSA box this week. Let’s just say that things don’t alway go as expected on the farm.

This week we finally have some kohlrabi for the boxes. The hot week really helped everything along. And now, today we had a beautiful gentle rain that did not give us a lot of volume, but there was no violent winds, or hail. Garlic scapes are also making an appearance, with their fun little curls. We use them in all kinds of ways: pesto, sauce, soup, salad, fried, sauteed, grilled, or roasted. Try some salad turnips this week which are a lot like radishes, but tend to be sweeter and the tops make nice tender cooked greens.

The lettuce is now being harvested from the field instead of the high tunnel. This means that the heads are smaller, so you can get two heads if you want and still finish them both. Lettuce does not like that hot weather we had, but the deer have been enjoying it anyways. We found about 10 perfect plants of green butterhead with the entire center eaten.

FYI: A few items will only show up as swaps sometimes. This week we found that a few plants here or there were making some progress, like broccoli, zucchini, or maybe pickles. These items will be more plentiful in the weeks to come.

The sheep are now grazing the summer pastures across the road. It was the longest period of time we’ve ever been able to rotate them around our house pastures. The wet cool spring helped those grasses last a long time. It just goes to show that no matter what we are growing here at the farm, something will do well. Diversity is the key.

Happy summer everyone!
